Hacksaw Ridge is the latest film from Mel Gibson. It is a welcome return to form for Mr. Gibson whose output as a director, although infrequent, has proved as provocative as it is passionate. It is a work with a pronounced world-view, one at odds with many of today's filmmakers. Film Review: Hacksaw Ridge - CatholicSkywalker The biggest flaw in Hacksaw Ridge is that it feels like two different movies. The first half is Doss' life and training in the army. The second half is the battle at Hacksaw Ridge, a patch of land above the cliffed shores of Okinawa that the allies desperately need to take in its battle with Japan. The History Behind Oscar-nominated Hacksaw Ridge When the Oscar nominations were announced today, Hacksaw Ridge — about Adventist World War II hero and Medal of Honor recipient Desmond Doss — landed six. The film has been nominated for best picture and Mel Gibson for best director. Andrew Garfield, who plays Doss, got a best actor nomination.
The whole setting, and I think it came from the movie we were doing and from Mel, the whole mission of the movie was very committed and very supportive. Most of the last half of the film is dedicated to a long and graphically violent recreation of the battle in Okinawa, where your troops attempt to take Hacksaw Ridge from the Japanese.
